- Spreaders
When implementing an automated feeding system in fish farms, it is not only important to transport the feed to the tanks or cages, but also to distribute it uniformly over the largest possible water surface. Spreaders are the final component in the automated distribution chain and play a key role in ensuring that feed reaches the greatest number of fish.
This type of equipment allows for more balanced feeding between dominant and less dominant fish by preventing feed from accumulating at a single point in the tank. As a result, feed access is improved, stress is reduced, and survival rates are enhanced, directly contributing to animal welfare and growth.
In addition, uniform feed distribution helps maintain water quality by minimizing feed waste accumulating at the bottom of tanks or cages — a key factor for efficient and sustainable aquaculture production.

Advantages of using spreaders
Choosing the right spreader provides important benefits for companies in the aquaculture sector:
- More uniform fish growth, as the feed is distributed among a greater number of individuals within each tank or cage.
- Improved FCR (Feed Conversion Rate), thanks to precise feed dosing and better distribution, avoiding unnecessary losses.
- Optimization of SGR (Specific Growth Rate), allowing fish to reach the target size in less time.
- Reduced need for labor for size grading tasks.
- Less effort when transferring fish between tanks due to more balanced feeding.
- Decreased feed waste, which also translates into improved water quality.
FFF’s automatic feeding systems are compatible with all types of spreaders used in aquaculture.
Types of Spreaders According to Tank Shape
Depending on the morphology of the tanks in aquaculture farms, we can group fish feed spreaders as follows:
1. Circular tanks
Inverted Cone
Circular feed distribution over a water surface that depends on the spreader’s angle and the height at which it is placed above the water.
Bottom Rotary Spreader
The perfect solution for tanks at sea. Consists of a tube that rotates on itself, spreading the feed based on the airflow, around the tank.
Top Rotary Spreader
Same operation as the previous one, but fixed to a structure and used for fish in land-based farms.
2. Rectangular tanks
Longitudinal Spreader
Spreader built with a perforated pipe on the bottom side to distribute feed along the tank. Depending on the pellet size, distance to be covered, and airflow, the desired effect will vary and so will the hole size.
Side Spreader
Similar in function to the previous one, but installed on tanks where the feed is dispensed from one side, allowing the water flow to carry it across the tank.
Bifurcated Spreader
Allows us to distribute feed almost equally from a single pipe to two different points.
Parabolic Spreader
Takes advantage of airflow to send the feed in a parabolic pattern, expanding the spreading area depending on the airflow.
